The most important thing is to maintain a working rapport. If things become emotionally 'charged' neither of you will be happy and learning will not happen. (Faber & Mazlish could come in handy here). If things seem 'overwhelming' then identifying smaller steps can help at first to build confidence. Sometimes education goes on at such a pace that students feel that every strategy is hopeless.
