I am also not a medical practitioner. Initrrially I was very skeptical about the use of drugs to quieten and 'contol' a child with ADHD. I agree that the child is not being helped to develop strategies to cope. However, having worked with an ADHD child in a classroom, I can say that the amount of learning that the child was able to achieve whilst 'drugged up' was significantly higher than on days when he came to school having not taken his medicine.
The amount of learning achieved by the others in the class was also significantly higher too, as they were not distracted or disturbed by his erratic behaviour.
The class teacher was also able to spend far more time teaching the whole class rather than concentrating her tiome, energy and efforts on one person. (The boy has no IndividualLearning Assistant)
In such a case, drugs seeem to be a necessary evil, in which the benefits to the greater whole class appear to justify their use. Sad, but true.
