I would look around in your community for specialist who does educational testing. To get a thorough test, find a professional in psychoeducational testing who has a PhD and specializes in this.

I have a similar story. My daughter was just diagnosed with dyslexia. She is very bright and learned to compensate. She was in reading recovery in 1st and 2nd grade. I have 2 teenagers and we read to her since infancy. Finally, I suspected something was not right and I asked to have her tested in the 2nd grade. The teacher said she was making progress and to wait a little while to see if she doesn't take off. She was reading at the second grade level at the end of school. We moved over the summer and was quite busy, when school started she tested at the 1 st grade level. She lost that much over the summer.

Anyhow, I've done a lot of reading and research since she was tested. Looking back there were all the signs I did not see, mainly because i just didnt know. She was never interested in books, it was hard to read to her cause she did not sit still. She was always in the nurses office with a stomache ache. This is a child that never got sick but she was always sick during school. She would always leave off the endings of words, like 'ed', 'es', 'ing', etc. she never understood the - who, what, when, where, why. I think she just guessed at those words cause she never got them right. To make it more complicated, she has been in a Spanish Immersion school since kindergarten, and I just attributed some of that to learning another language. My daughter was also the class clown, she really is very funny, but that's how she compensated and managed to get by.

The earlier the diagnosis and intervention the better the outcome for the child. Read "overcoming dyslexia" by shaywitz
