Sounds like he could be dyslexic. Regardless of what mental or physical challenges he may have to his education, what he likely needs most right now is to feel like he's worth something. Be sure to praise him for things he does well/right at home. Anything and everything but be reasonable with the compliments so he will know they are sincere. INSIST in writing if you must that he be tested for Dyslexia at his public school if they havent' already. They are required to teach every child but it costs more for special needs kids so they can be reluctant and may do a sloppy job. (NO reflection on individual teachers here.) Check out the resources on this site http://www.interdys.org/index.htm and call the department of education in your state to find out how they can help your son. DON"T GIVE UP! You are his only hope to encourage him and help him be sucessful. I'm sure your efforts will be rewarded with getting him some professional help in the end but you must be persistent.
