Author: Dr. Deborah Reed
Subject: This was a swiftly escalating nightmare.
In reply to: Commanding Officer Steele 's message, "CO Steele turned to Deborah Reed" on 14:37:01 07/09/01 Mon

Deb looked around at the resin surrounding her, in a five-foot radius. The buffoon in the mechsuit had been thorough; she couldn't step in the stuff without adhering to the deck, and it was too far to jump.

Something was happening in the surrounded craft...it had to be; things were too quiet. But as the rampaging persistent horrors began to act up again, and the elder of the two leapt--actually leapt--upon the strange alien craft, Deborah knew the powderkeg was about to explode. Not in those exact words considering her history, but the sentiment was real enough. She could only imagine the sketchy figure within threatening her charge.

"AAAALLLLIII!!! ALI!!!" she cried futiley. But amid the confused mess of platoons, demons, and a mystery ship the cry was lost.

"Oh!" she cried, as a demon knife landed dangerously close. What was Commander Steele thinking leaving her helpless and exposed like this? She had a feeling she'd be having a chat with Old Grim himself if she survived this.

She began to rue her gift. Not medicine, for saving lives was and always would be her first and most important and well-developed talent. She thought now of her telekinesis, mild and useless in this situation. It was something she had been born with as many children born on starbases or realmcraft had. She barely used it and never lifted anything heavier than her morning tea. At times, she hardly gave the gift a second thought. But now...now..

"Come on, Deb, it's only a few feet...so what if you've never levitated? Adrenalin; someone close to me is in danger. I've watched all the medholos--it should be a natural response...I just have to try and--

No.

No, I just have to DO."

Deborah closed her eyes and focused. She felt the strain as her feet separted perhaps a micron from the floor. Perhaps it was her imagination. A moment later, as white hot pain seemed to spread form her stomach to the rest of her body, she didn't care.

"YEEEEAAAAARGHH!!" she cried, doubling over in agony, tears streaming down her face.
"...you MUST go on...."
"W-what?"

Slowly, tentatively, she opened her eyes. She was curled in a fetal position, lying a few feet outside the circle of resin. She tried to stand, to see what the troops were doing, and still hearing the maddening cries of the Manches, but most of all she wondered if that hatch had opened.

Deborah stood for less than a few seconds before the stabbing pains returned, and darkness claimed her...
