Thanks for your input Mark.
Have tested it with the downloaded test tape as well as a pianocorder tape adjusted as you say with drivers detached but light stays illuminated so there seems to be no decoding.
I have still to test for a signal at the board so as to rule out the tape deck.
Great to know that there is the knowledge and also the parts out there to help revive this unit.
