Discussion on how and why we need to be reconciled.
God never intended for us to be seperate people. We were all made in his image. Therefore we need to be first reconciled to God, and then reconciled to each other. Because if we can't do this with the body of Christ, then how can we share the message of him with the world? Now, this is not to say that it will be easy, nor does everyone think this is needed. However, God said "If you say you love me, but hate your brother, you are lying" because "God is love." Please feel free to post your ideas, feelings, prayers, and suggestions here.

Threshold 3: Dealing -- Kenneth, 06:39:45 01/07/02 Mon

Ok, so I have a problem what do I do now? Up to this point, everyone, Christian or not was in the same boat. A Christian can hold racial fears in their heart just as much as a non-Christian. They both feel identical. But here the road forks. It is here that the Christian has to depend on God.
One thing that we as children of God have had to come to grips with is that we are all sinners and that nothing we can do will change that. Only through the power of God can our old nature, the sin nature, be changed. So what do we "do"? For those of us who have been hurt, we need to bring those hurts before Jesus and ask him to heal them. They don't heal on their own, no matter how much time we give them. Then we need to ask him to help us forgive those who have hurt us. If we don't forgive we will not be forgive and nothing will be accomplished. For those of us who have hurt others or have held sin in their heart, we need to also come to Jesus and ask him to forgive us for the wrongs we have done. Then we need to ask him for the humility to admit and ask forgivess of those we have sinned against here on earth.
On the physical level, here, both those hurt and those hurting must respond to the issues raised. Whether this be by recognizing the pain and bitterness that one has held onto for so long or by seeing the results of what their actions have done to someone else (physically or emotionally).
What can one do to help others around them in this area? Well first check yourself. Make sure that you are right so that those that are watching you can see what is right. Model repentance, share your "hurts to forgiveness" stories. Tell about the times you avoided or hurt others. We have to be alright, because "before we can take the speck out of the brothers eye, we have to remove the plank from ours first..."
Then we must proclaim clearly that Jesus is the way. In him he already made the two one. He already paved the way for reconciliation in his own blood. This isn't something we can do on our own, we have to let him lead us.
Talk it out. People are never going to get anything resolved if people sit back closed mouth and don't actively and verbally talk through their issues.
And finally, I would say to act on it. Words without action don't really mean much. Which leads us into our next threshold...

I have a problem, but now with you Kenneth. I think many of the Christians in America, and specifically the dispensationalists have become very anti-semitic to a ridiculous point. Now, by semitic, I do not mean Jewish alone, I mean the other sons of Shem:the Arabs.
I think the American media is doing about as much for the Arabs right now as Germans did for the Jews in the decade before WWII. You never hear about the slaughtered babies and women and children, never see the pictures, never hear the historical story on CNN. And this is not just in Palestine, but Iraq and Afghanistan as well. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children have died of malnutrition in the last couple decades from our sanctions and bombings. Of course it is justified because Saddam Hussein is a 'murderer and has chemical weapons and weapons of mass destruction'. And the American government doesn't? Whats more, the American government uses weapons of (fairly) mass destruction on an almost continual basis. We should be the ones that someone comes in and 'takes that evil regime out'. In Afghanistan, we were just killing for the sake of George Bush's popularity and historicity. We've kicked out the only government that could hold the country together and instantly it was reverted to anarchical warlords killing each other. Opium poppies are flourishing and out flying machines are still killing 'tall people' (did anyone hear about that one? I wanted to barf)
In Israel, the Zionists are killing for the sake of ridding the land of the people who have lived there for the last two millenium. The death toll is so high on the Palestinian side compared to the Israeli that it makes me weep to see anyone chortle about 'both sides have equal responsiblity' even though most Americans and american media blame everything on Arafat.
So anyway. Stop hating Arabs. You'd be surprised how kind and friendly the average Arab was. Stop justifying Jews that commit atrocites. Yes Islam is a terrible heresy, but so is the Judaism rejection of Christ. don't trust the media, it is of the devil.

In your zeal to "stop hating Arabs," you have become anti-Semitic in the general sort of way, i.e. against the Jews. In WWII, Hitler disseminated the idea that Jews were evil as communists, perverts, and zionists. If you did your history, you will find that the "Palestinians" today are hardly an indigenous people to Israel; more like refugees, perhaps. Both peoples are responsible for the present crisis, Arabs included.

Threshold 2: Awareness -- Kenneth, 04:06:37 01/02/02 Wed

Nothing can hurt more than the brutal truth. Noone likes to be told that there clothing isn't in style, or that they have an annoying personality, or that something they said was offensive. People don't like this type of truth because it makes them take a look at themselves. I can remember a time when I was pulled aside and told that I had made a wrong conclusion about someone and embarassed them. Then I was told that I had a problem speaking what I was thinking and that it was very annoying. Boom! it was all out there. At first I was frustrated and didn't respond. Then I realized that I was doing the very thing he was talking about! We all tend to view ourselves and our surroundings through a very narrow lens causing us to miss a large portion of the reality around us. However, in this stage of the journey along racial reconciliation we begin to see the truth of our own situation.
This is played out in one manner in what has come to be called "Race Matters", a forum where real stories of hurt, guilt, or even apathy are shared in a multicultural setting. For many people this is a rude awakening to what is really going on inside the people around them. It is here that a person begins to recognize racial tensions around them and start to see where it applies in their own lives.
We have to be careful though, that we remember racial rec. is a journey and not a destination. The Political Correct movement says that this threshold is the destination. Once one can see the problems they can be sensitive to them (in other words, avoid them). This is not the end, but rather a point along the way. Once we see a problem, the next logical step would be to do something about it.

Threshold 1: Closed and apathetic -- Kenneth, 05:51:06 12/26/01 Wed

How many times when someone begins talking about racism, do you tell yourself "I don't have that problem, this doesn't apply to me." Or how about when someone steers a conversation toward racial issues and you roll your eyes. How often do you hear yourself quoting the phrase "Well I have a (insert color) friend." Im not trying to put anyone down, the point is we all have been here. Noone (at least noone that I have met) likes to admit that they have a problem with racism in their hearts. A major problem today, is that we don't recognize the racism that we do have. The Politically Correct movement has taught all of us, since we were little, that everyone is the same and that we should be radically tolerant of everyone and offend noone. The principles are good. However, it leaves us with a false sense of guiltlessness. "I don't burn crosses in people's yards. Im ok." The reality is in each of us there are issues that we have with people that are different from us. This is either as a result of upbringing, or negative experiences, or even media.
The point is, this is where I don't think I have a problem. People here, usually have friends mostly of their same race.

One of the first things I had to realize before I really started looking at racial reconciliation was that it is a journey and not a destination. We cannot "acheive" racial reconciliation, we strive for it. In this vein, two workers (Doug Schaupp and Tracey Shyr) in this area along with some of their friends developed a list of six threshholds that people go through along this journey. I am now going to list them and discuss them in the coming weeks.
I)Closed and apathetic toward race issues
II)Aware and taking personal responsibility for racial tensions
III)Dealing with racial issues
IV)Intentional relationship involving race specifically
V)Sharing in someone else's pain and being an advocate for them
VI)Living in Grace/Freedom/Hope/and Conviction

I look forward to discussing these with you all.

New Approach -- Kenneth, 08:58:14 12/17/01 Mon

First of all I would like to appologize to everyone for not having kept this up to date. This semester should be different. I plan to do something different with this forum. Before there seemed to be alot of discussion on a broad range of topics, but now Im going to move into specifics. I am going to be looking at several scriptures and other material. This material will be coinciding with a Bible study that I will be leading next semester so you guys at my college (you know who you are) check it out.
