Don't know if you've finished this or not Gregs but what i did for this was to use numbers for everything i.e. month, day and year(obviously) so instead of it being e.g. 4th september 02 it would be day = 04, month = 09 and year = 2002. This way you can calculate a rough age by taking year of birth away from the current year, after that you can calculate an exact age by determining whether his birthday has passed or not, hope this helps.
