Appears that with the Michelson-Morley experiment, "Physics"
is the established Discipline; supplanting the name of "Natural Philosophy". --- In fact, the M-M exper. was of such precision (using the interferometer, that it could distinguish a portion of a wave length) that its 'result'; the famous "Null Result"; should not be questioned. ---
What became 'the question' was: "If the M-M exper. proves there is NO aether! --- Then light, unlike sound, is a dynamic Universal phenomonon that is void of a medium !"---
The World's best Scientists, especially Physicists & Mathematicians; worked day & night to try to solve this
'contradictory' Universal phenomonon ! --- Some Scientists came to the conclusion the M-M exper. must have errored.---
They calculated, that at some time during the Earth's revolving around the Sun, the aether drift v is equal to the Earth's orbital v; which is approx. 10 to the minus 4 of the vel., of light. Thus v/c must be at least 10 to the minus 4.
Using light of wave length 5 x 10 to the -7m, they computed
a shift of "delta n = 0.4 fringe". --- Refined M-M exper. obtained a precision with the interferometer able to detect a shift of one-hundredth of a fringe (sensitivity to spare); proving THERE IS NO AETHER; SPACE IS A VOID ! ---
Few exper. 'failures' (the null result) have been more stimulating than the M-M exper. --- It presented a challenge
to explain its 'failure' (actually; contrary to sound; how
the dynamic phenomonon of light occurs, traverses space!).
