Subject: Mariah pulled in the driveway in a little red Ford Taurus rental car at a sensible speed...

She braked the car gently, and turned it off. She shoved the key in her back pocket, and got out of the car. Giving a sad sigh, she walked to the porch. Majik crouched low on the porch railing, a low growl rumbling in the black cat's throat. She flicked her tail back and forth, her cattish green eyes trained on something farther out in the yard. Mariah didn't like the way the cat looked. Her movements quick and flowing, Mariah darted up the porch stairs, unlocked the door, and went in, Majik finally pulling herself from the danger she spotted and followed her inside.

Mariah locked the door behind her, her hands shaking. She didn't trust anyone or anything anymore. Too much had happened in the past two weeks that had made her hide her sense of trust to even her brothers. She moved the curtain back slightly, and studied the outside. She didn't see anything, but she knew better than to think Majik was just growling at a rabbit. Mariah sighed, and went to the kitchen.

Mariah glanced at the clock on the stove. 6:30. She should start dinner up. If Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were kind enough to let her stay here, she may as well earn her keep. Fishing around in the cabinets, she gathered up some tomato sauce, spaghetti noddles, and hamburger. She would make spaghetti like she made back home.

She got out a skillet and plopped the hamburger on it. She turned the heat on to medium heat, and then searched around for some onions, tomatos, mushrooms, peppers, and several herbs and spices. She poured the tomato sauce in a sauce pan over low heat, and then diced up half of the onion. She added them to the tomato sauce, and then chopped her tomato in mini chunks. She poured them into the sauce. She only added a few small slices of mushrooms, considering she didn't care much for them. She chopped the pepper up into minced peices, and added them as well.

Mariah stirred the hamburger around, which was frying nicely. Mariah got out a large pot, and filled it up with water. She placed it on high heat on the back burner. While she waited for the water to boil and the hamburger to fry, she chopped the garlic and other herbs and spices up and added them to the sauce as well. She stirred up really well, and then added several drops of hot sauce for some spiceyness. Mariah had had several Spanish friends when she was young, and would always help them make their spaghetti sauce. She knew the recipe by heart.

The water started to boil, and Mariah broke the spaghetti noodles in half, and added them to the water. The hamburger finished frying, and Mariah set it on low heat. She warmed the sauce up the rest of the way, and stirred the noodles. She tested the spaghetti noodles for tenderness, and then turned the heat down. She tested the sauce for heat, and took it off the stove.

She got out pot holders, and set them down on the table. She set the sauce on one, and the hamburger skillet on the other. She set the table, and then sat down. Why bother calling them when they'd be coming in here in a few minutes.

Meanwhile, under the table, Majik gave a low cattish growl in her throat. I don't like the smell of the outside. Daylight or not, I don't like it.

Raven cocked his head at the cat. It did smell funny out there. I think its that guy again!

Dreadful, heavy with puppies, lifted her head lazily. What guy?

Brandon! Raven's lip raised as he yapped his name.

Majik furrowed her eyes at Raven. Brandon's dead, you stupid fool! Chase killed him! The black feline grew quiet. Her eyes got wide, and her ears flattened. Did you hear that?

Dreadful's ears shot forward. No

Majik peered out at the back door. Something didn't smell right. The last sound she heard sounded like someone outside. Someone she didn't like.
