US warns against eating Florida puffer fish

WASHINGTON, Apr 16 (Reuters) - US regulators on Monday warned Americans not to eat puffer fish caught in the Titusville, Florida, area because they may contain a naturally occurring toxin that made three people ill and can be deadly.

Symptoms of the toxic poisoning can include tingling and burning in the mouth and tongue, numbness, drowsiness and incoherent speech, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The symptoms develop rapidly, within 30 minutes to two hours of eating the fish. In severe cases, respiratory paralysis and death can result. The toxin cannot be destroyed by cooking or freezing.

Three New Jersey residents have become ill from eating puffer fish, also known as blowfish or sea squab, from the area, the FDA said. Two of them ate fish caught by a recreational fisher, but the third patient reported buying the fish from a New Jersey fish market.

Anyone with symptoms of possible poisoning and who may have eaten puffer fish should immediately contact a physician or a local poison control center.

The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state authorities in Florida and New Jersey still are investigating the matter.

Poison: Many parts of the blowfish (including the liver, muscles, skin, and ovaries) contain an extremely strong, paralyzing poison called tetrodoxin. This poison is about a thousand times deadlier than cyanide. There is no known antidote for this poison. Fugu (torafugu or fugu rubripes, Japanese pufferfish) is eaten in Japan, but is only cooked by specially-trained chefs who can minimize the amount of poison. Even so, many Japanese diners have died from eating this poisonous delicacy.

Thanks Susie, I guess this about sums it all up for me. I had the ocassion to help my neighbor clean some of these little wonders last summer. I am deathly [no pun intended] afraid to consume this particular delicacy. It is also know generically as "Chicken of the Sea" in these parts[Florida] and many other tropical seaside areas around the United States.

Why tempt fate when canned tuna is still cheaper than gasoline. Guess if one were inclined to eat of it and take chances, it is delicious, however I threw out the bag of fish that I was given as a form of payment for helping to clean them.

I also believe that scientists are attempting to synthisize the poison as a skeletal muscle paralynt similar to curare. Hope they find something else to do with them other than continue to eat them.

God bless you all and happy fishing. LOL

Respectfully:

William.
