Carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins, and protein are all needed in your pet’s diet. If you are missing only on of these your dog is malnourished and will suffer severely. On the next page are pictures of malnourished animals.
Commercial dog food has made it easy for the consumer to purchase food that is good for your animal. You must be sure though that you get a named brand. The reason for this is all of the off name brands have been sitting on that shelf for quite a while and the food, just by sitting there, will loose nutrition.
Commercial dog food comes in three types: Dry, Wet, and Semi-wet. The cheapest of the three has to be dry food and not only does it give your pet good nutritional value, but it also cleans the teeth of tarter build up. The only reason you may have to use wet or semi-wet, is if your pet has a dental problem or he needs to be on special food because of some disease like diabetes that require different nutrients.
There are two ways to feed your pet. First is free choice, were the food is out and your pet can freely eat as much as he would like. This can only be used with dry food because if you leave out wet food it will harden and bacteria will start to multiply all over it. Secondly we have timed were everyday at the same time you can feed your pet a controlled amount preventing obesity.
Know what you pet eats all the time and his activity output. If your pet is starting to look a little large, be sure to correct the situation right away. Obesity can lead to serious problems and large veterinary bills. The top breeds that are most likely to become obese if intake is not controlled are

• Labrador Retriever
• Cairn Terrier
• Shetland Sheepdog
• Basset Hound
• Cavalier King Charles spaniel
• Beagle

When feeding dogs with special problems, such as gestating, puppies, or overweight dogs, your pets will need special attention and a change in their diet. When feeding a pregnant bitch you must understand that her body calls for much more food than is use to. Your bitch is providing food for all of those puppies and herself. Be sure to triple or quadruple the amount of food she has been eating. If you bitch starts to become skinny, up her intake, if she starts to become obese and not just large, lower her intake. Even after her puppies are born she will still need a lot of food to produce milk for her puppies. Bitches tend to become obese after the have had puppies so be sure to control her intake.
Puppies and older dogs require a selective amount of carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins, and protein. When shopping for food the label usually shows for what type of stage of the dog’s life this food is best for. Purchase the correct bag and be sure to control your pet’s intake right away. If you prevent you animal from becoming obese you will save yourself a lot of problems.
