Subject: Riding Kalvin!

I have decided to take Kalvin in the larger course as he is more experienced than my other horses! (However, they soon will be, but i care about their education, and didn't want to overface them, as 5ft is well within their capabilities)! However, Kalvin and I found the going a little wet, so i put his studs in, (the square ones) using the new plastic T Tap, it is much safer! As we set off on the course, he became very strong and excitable, but he is always like that when jumping! As the first fence was just a plain gate he missed the last stride and jumped extra high, i was kinda expecting this though so it wasn't that bad! As we gallop along the grassy noll, I slow him up to tackle the coffin, one of my favourites! I manage to hold him and release so he doesn't take off to far away, he jumps in easily, this makes the jump down simple, and i made a quick descision for one bounce stride up and out, so i pushed him on, but sitting quietly, he jumped perfectly! GOOD BOY! After galloping another 1/2mile i think: Right next is the sheeps pen, he is really good at parrallel bars in the showjumping arena, and a naturally long, giving canter stride, so i opt to jump the corner, instead of the bounce, as parrallel bars produce a better bascule, he did wonderfully! Galloping on again, popping logs, ditches and rustics we only have a few fences left. I slow him up about 100yards before the feeder, as being a greedy bugger, i had to drive on really hard! He was contemplating on stopping and eating the imaginary food, but he realised about 21/2strides in that there was none! Bummer! With this he put in a tremendous leap, as if to tell the feeder it was stupid! Okay, 3 left, the bounce into water! As i said earlier, he has a long giving stride so i shorten him up about 200yards away!! It took me 100yards to create the correct collected rhythm, which i maintained in the last 100yards! The result was a fantastic bounce in, however he was a little standoffish, jumping out as he jumt saw the water, he usually revels in the water, but as it was slippy already! He put in a fantastic leap, but I was already sat correctly, due to the correctness of the first bounce, however on landing he thought it was marvellous! We jumped the bank out no probs, it was a short stretch to the sydney steps (scary!) so i regulated the rhythm to the same collected canter i acheived for the bounce! He jumped to the first fine, and then to the second! But instead of jumping to the last then off, he missed the last out! Silly boy, this threw me slighly, but i regained my composure, for the last fence a hedge, with a circle cut out to jump threw! I really egged him on for this one, carefully not to flatten this ideal jumping pace! He engaged his quaters, and basculed beautifully, (he must think it;s a working hunter class hehe) It was a photo finish!!! GOOD BOY!!!
(However, I did wonder about who will wash all our muddy things!! ... Mum, err... Dad??!?! ....
lol!
