Well if you route the traffic through another system then you are relatively safe. I dont thikn that the term hardware firewall would mean anything though. It will block traffic but it isn't classed as a firewall. I would have to urg you to manually secure your system.
Disable and servers or daemons that you do not need
Equip strong passwords for thr ones you do use.
Disable unlimited password and login attempts on any required server.
Set it to three at the most.
As for software firewalls, i dont think that they are relatively safe. They can be exploited or overloaded or passed via trust.
Yes they willl stop some annoying network probing but when it all boils down to it, if somebody wants to gain entry passed a firewall, i am sure anyone with half a brain could do so.
If you are running a linux or unix operating system, make sure that you have the whole system patched to stamp out any stack overflows or root exploits. Dont always rely on firewalls, you should be bale to run on an everyday basis without worrying about your system even without a firewall.
Once you are fully sure that your system is unbeatable then you can place up your firewall ( or router ) to keep the mind at peace.
