Subject: Kevin Saunderson On "DEEJAYING"

Every DJ on earth has cleared a floor at some point. How do you cope?

"When this has happened it makes me realize that I'm not perfect, but it's not good to panic. So best thing to do is to drink a shot of tequila and pull one of the hottest tunes out the crate, and slam it in"

------------------------------------------------------------
I play in a local bar and I'm always getting asked for the big pop-dance hits (eg Moony 'I'll Be Loving You', Spiller etc) even though I was booked to play underground house. Should I play them?

"Personally I play only what I think is good and what comes from my heart, so that's your call. I believe in being real with yourself"
------------------------------------------------------------
I don't seem to have a particular mixing 'style'. Sometimes I do long, slow blends, sometimes quick-fire changes with lots of crossfader/EQ tricks. Is this a bad thing?

"The more you play, the more you develop a style that fits your unique personality, and the music that you want to protect"
------------------------------------------------------------
My mate and I both play house but he can scratch and I can't. Is scratching an important skill for DJs to have, or just for hip hop DJs?

"Scratching is not at all important to become a DJ or to become a great DJ. I started out scratching - actually my DJ name used to be 'Kevin Scratch-master Reese', but I grew into a style that featured more blending than scratching and now I don't do any scratching at all. I believe it is easier for people to dance without the DJ doing too many tricks"
-----------------------------------------------------------

How many records do you normally carry about with you -- say for a three-hour set?

"Now I use Final Scratch more so I have about 3000 songs loaded into the computer. I still take about 50 to 60 records as a back up"
-----------------------------------------------------------
I like to mix up styles (house, disco, hip hop, breaks). Do you think it's possible for a DJ to 'make it' playing eclectically when so many clubs play just one sort of music?
I think it depends on what type of club you're playing in. I don't think it's ideal.
-----------------------------------------------------------
What advice would you give to anyone trying to start a DJ career now?

"To practice and educate yourself with the music that you love and play. You never know when your opportunity will come to shine"

---------------------------------------------------------

Mate, Personally I would play what keeps the crowd on the floor.
You automatically get the feel for it from the first record you put on, Look around then venue and see who is singing a lone to it, I played in a pub called the Royal Oak on Saturday nights for about 4 months, Sometimes it would be packed out and sometimes it would be dead.
It also depends on how many wife beaters have been drunk as well.

Play what you feel and enjoy and im sure you will be fine.
Catch me on this station PB108FM Every Sunday from midday till 2.00pm and you will see what I mean.
