Mercado stood between his friends, preventing the situation from escalating.

Rana is not who he was, friend-Grey. He has shown remorse for his actions, and Mercado believes he was a victim as much as you or anyone else! Do not judge the man for the actions of the spirit, for both are capable of change. First-hand have I seen it; at Mercado's side has this man been since leaving Rugby in search of Ebonhawk and....Lighdia. Lighdia--understand does Mercado Justin's ache for Deborah, for recently he too has lost someone forever. But still time is there not? Know where Deborah is, so talk can friend-Grey?"

Justin did lower his weapon, but he didn't put it away yet. Mercado hoped his words were soothing and would sway his friend. Without Rana, Mercado might not have found Ebonhawk or Lighdia. And without the wizard, the Targetmasters might still be on Arrakis facing an Amtal challenge and not on the same vessel as FawnDoo, whose path seemed to be leading to the same place as theirs.
