[Note to JONNY: I need to make a few changes to B08... basically near the beginning Willow and Buffy/Dawn need to mention the fact that Willow will be moving into a flat at the university. Then can you change the final AMY/WILLOW scene to Willow packing her stuff up at the house OR unpacking her stuff at her new flat... sorry to add this now but it will help out in this ep and later in the season... :)]

ACT ONE (by Noggins)
Previously: Buffy and Xander almost kissing in ep 1; Buffy telling Willow that she doesn't know what she feels; Spike telling Buffy he knows she don't love him and that Xander will make her happy; Buffy and Xander kissing in the rain; Giles telling Willow she has the potential to lead; Willow using magic in the ether; Amy telling Willow to control the magic; Anya being brought out of the ether; Anya telling Xan to let her down gently; monks making the key into human form made from Buffy; loony-Tara saying Dawn is glowing green energy; chief-Knight of Byzantium telling Dawn what it means to be the key; Dawn being bled by Doc; Buffy saying their blood is the same and jumping; Buffy arising and being scared; Buffy telling Dawn she doesn't wanna die; Dawn being sucked by a vamp; Dawn in hospital; Spike saying he won't let harm come to her again; Dawn with Kit; Dawn merging into Buffy scenes which go faster and faster�

Two sets of feet walk through the grass. Buffy does this long soliloquy voice-over saying how it takes certain things to make you realise what people mean to you and what is important in life; sometimes you need a bit of help to get that clarity. The camera pulls up to reveal Buffy and Dawn walking through the cemetery; Buffy carries a big mallet. Buffy continues her voice-over. Buffy says that sometimes you need things to make you realise how important people are to you. They give you love. They give you the clarity to see the things you wouldn't otherwise see. Buffy and Dawn walk to in front of the willow tree whose branches partially obscure Buffy's grave. Dawn looks to Buffy and gives her a reassuring smile.

There is a fairground in Sunnydale. Lots of people. A college guy drags his girl away for a quickie. They realise something in the bushes. They go to investigate and four 3 foot high elf-looking demons (one of them with a santa claus hat on) see the couple. They are kinda like gremliny things�

CREDITS

Happy music as we get an outside shot of the school and the hustle and bustle. Kit and Dawn walk through the school corridors that are decorated with Christmas holiday banners. They reach class and sit down. There is a knock on the door and the very, very cute new guy to the class - Narayan - enters. The teacher introduces him to the class as a pupil joining the school next term. Narayan sits down at a table adjacent to Dawn. Dawn and Narayan stare at one another for a moment. Dawn is blatantly attracted�

Buffy is helping Xander unpack equipment for the new caf�. It is looking near completion. There are metal tables and chairs on the floor (still in their packaging) and the kitchen area has new coffee machines in boxes e.t.c. Xander is getting worked up (presumably over Anya and is rushing stuff) he cuts him self on a knife he uses to open a box. Buffy takes Xander's hand and looks at it; she gets a plaster and puts it on. The two are very close - almost kiss moment. Buffy looks up at Xander. Buffy tells Xander he needs to take things slowly. Xander says he is just worried about Anya. Buffy tells Xander she'd have done the same; they all would. Xander's not so sure - he mentions the fact that Anya has been gone for a week now. Buffy says Anya was living in the ether for over 5 weeks� her essence fading away believing she wouldn't ever come back and then suddenly she is brought back; she is gonna feel lost and scared and alone. Xander asks if that is what it was like for Buffy. Buffy replies. Xander says he is so sorry. Buffy says she so badly wanted to go back� but she is happy now. She has the people she loves around her. Xander smiles.

Willow comes out of a class talking to another student - maybe Heather from ep 3. She sees Amy. Amy and Willow talk about Amy using the magic in Ep 9. Amy admits how frightening it was to be taken over by the magic; she lost control and she didn't like that and then when she couldn't re-open the portal she was scared. Willow said she is safe. Amy said she used magic and she is still okay. Willow says it took a lot outta her. Amy produces a crystal. She gives it to Willow as a present. She tells her it is her grandmother's focusing crystal; it helps you focus your magic. Willow tries to reject it saying she won't use magic again. Amy reminds Willow that the magic is part of her; she says keep it anyway. Amy rushes off to class leaving Willow in the cafeteria; she looks at a television surrounded by students which has a reporter talking about the couple being attacked. Willow rushes out of the uni.

ACT TWO (by Dawneen)
The bell rings at school and pupils leave the room. Dawn is left in there with Narayan. She speaks with him. She says the town is pretty much small (maybe uses the one Starbucks quote from Xander) but offers that if he wanted to go somewhere - maybe tonight. Narayan says he'd like that. Dawn smiles and says Kit and her are going to the Bronze as there is a Christmas end of term party. She tells Narayan to ask anyone where it is; it's the only place worth going. Narayan smiles.

Buffy and Willow are in the training room researching on the couches while Xander goes to make coffee. Willow is fiddling with the crystal Amy gave her. Buffy asks her about it. Willow admits what it is for. She isn't sure she is ready to use magic again though. Buffy says from what Xander tells her she really kept her cool when she used magic before. Willow says it was incredibly hard to focus on using just the white magic. Buffy says that is what the crystal for; she says she knows Willow will make the right choice. Willow looks at the crystal some more. Xander returns with 3 espressos (obviously trying stuff out!). Buffy comments on Xander taking so long to make such a little amount of coffee. Willow types away on the computer; she says there has been another attack - near the mall. The research is not working. Buffy says Xander and her will check out the mall while Willow continues to research.

Anya is standing in front of her tree again. There is a noise behind her - Spike. Anya turns and looks upset. Anya says everything has changed; she doesn't even know if she fits in anymore. Anya looks tired and pissed off; Spike asks if she is okay. Anya asks if she looks alright. Spike says he missed her; they all did. Anya asks why Xander bought her back. Spike says love. Anya says Xander does not love her. Spike says maybe it just isn't the love Anya wants from Xander. Anya looks down. She asks if anyone knows about the soul. Spike says just Dawn. Anya asks why he hasn't told anyone else. Spike says the soul doesn't change what he has done in the past. Anya reminds him it does affect what he does from now on. Spike says he needs a drink and Anya goes to join him.

Buffy asks Xander walk towards the mall. There is only silence between them. Buffy asks Xander how he feels now Anya is back. Xander admits he missed her so badly and he thought that by getting her back he could love her again; but things don't work like that. More silence. Xander stops Buffy and asks why everything has felt awkward between them since the kiss. Buffy looks away. Xander says he doesn't want their friendship to be put in danger because of that kiss - he loves Buffy too much for that. Buffy smiles and hugs Xander and says she loves him too (over his shoulder we can see she means it in another way). The two enter the mall and go into the cordoned off area; they see the blood. Buffy says this is getting serious. Xander speaks to Willow on the phone. Willow has found the demon in the records and says it is attracted to populated places. Xander and Buffy rush off to the Bronze.

Dawn enters the Bronze looking really stunning. Dawn sees Kit and they talk. A new song comes on. Dawn and Kit go up and dance. Kit and Dawn are doing this seductive and sexy dance as Narayan watches on from the shadows. Dawn opens her eyes and everything goes disjointed and she kinda sees through Buffy's eyes. The room starts to spin. Kit asks if she is okay.

Spike and Anya are on a couch in the Bronze (this scene should be very much like in S4 where they talked about their problems�). Anya mopes about Xander being indecisive and Spike says about Buffy. Anya leans her head on Spike's shoulder. The gremlins pop up behind them. Spike protects Anya.

Buffy and Xander race into the Bronze and see the gremlins. Xander, Buffy, Spike and Anya fight the gremlins. Lots of fighting and chasing them around.

The room continues to spin for Dawn; she speaks through Buffy's voice. Narayan watches on and then walks off.

Buffy speaks in Dawn's voice and is momentarily weaker - luckily Xander saves her. At the end of the short battle two gremlins are dead and the other two run off in separate directions.

Dawn collapses.

Buffy says Dawn and she rushes through the crowds to find her. She tries to get Dawn to wake up. Buffy touches Dawn and her head starts to fill with Dawn's memories and thoughts. Suddenly the thoughts stop. Buffy looks to Dawn in horror. Buffy backs away from Dawn and runs off. Xander looks to Spike. Spike tells Xander to go.

Narayan uses a phone outside; he speaks in Byzantium and the translation lets us realise what he says. He says the vessel is merging back into the slayer; the Key's power is fading. (Up until this point we can think Narayan is a good guy). The scene moves to the other end of the phone where an elderly Knight of Byzantium is revealed. He tells Narayan that it may already be too late; he has to destroy the vessel and the Key before the mother can come forth. Narayan looks worried; he says the Vessel is human. The Knight says hundreds have died in trying to prevent the apocalypse; he cannot let human weakness stop him from completing the Knight's duties. Narayan hangs up.

ACT THREE (by Mat)
Willow is researching still. She looks to the crystal and she holds it; she gets flashes of dark evil Willow and she puts the crystal down in worry/shock. There is banging on the door. Willow opens it. It is Anya and Spike with Dawn. Spike lies Dawn on the couch. Dawn is mumbling incoherently. Willow asks what is happening. Anya tries to explain but she goes silent when Dawn responds to Spike. Spike goes to Dawn's side; he gets her to focus. Dawn speaks in a mix of her and Buffy's speech and her sentences are almost insane and incoherent. Almost. Dawn gets out that she has been experiencing merging moments with Buffy. Spike doesn't understand. Dawn manages (between panting) that she is merging back into Buffy; the monks that made her; their magic is fading. Spike looks to the other with worry.
Willow is busy researching - she talks about how the monks used ancient magics to put the Key in the form of a human. Willow basically explains that the monks made Dawn from her; the magic that keeps them apart is fading - due to the fact that Glory used the Key and then Dawn was bit and with time the magic has faded. Spike smashes something. He says they've heard this all before. Willow says she is trying. Spike asks about the monks; Willow now gets aggressive back and says they are dead. Spike and Willow face off - tension� or sexual tension? :p Anya calls for the others. Dawn is going into a fit. Willow calms her. Willow says they need to get her to Willow's room in the university; she has things that can help subdue the pain.

Buffy has run to the construction site where she died in 'The Gift'. It of course has changed a bit since then. She stands in the middle of the tower's rubble. Xander steps up behind her. He asks why she came here. Buffy starts talking about the night she jumped from the tower; she basically says she died to save the world� to save her sister. Xander responds. Buffy asks what was it worth. Xander doesn't get it. Buffy says Dawn is fading away - she can feel it; she can feel Dawn's memories and thoughts merge into her. Buffy says she is losing her sister and she can't fight to keep her alive. Xander touches Buffy's cheek softly. He basically says she has to be strong for Dawn. Suddenly Buffy and Xander are attacked by the two gremlins again. Xander rolls Buffy away from the gremlins. Gremlins attack and Buffy gets hurt and Xander kicks arse. Then Xander almost gets killed but Buffy saves the day. Xander's cell phone rings; he says Dawn has been taken to Willow's room. Buffy is now really worried. She runs off with Xander closely following.

Spike waits by Dawn's side. Through the window looking into the room Anya and Willow are watching. Willow comments on how peaceful she looks. Anya asks if Dawn is gonna die. Willow responds. Willow asks what it was like where Anya was. Anya responds. Willow apologises. Anya says it was her choice. Buffy and Xander arrive. Buffy rushes to Dawn's side; she is motherly and smoothes Dawn's hair away from her forehead. Spike explains she is in a coma; they're losing her. Xander says they can't just stand around. Spike asks Xander if he thinks he likes seeing Dawn like this. Xander says they can't just give up. Willow stands up and tells Xander and Anya to go to the university library and get everything can find on the monks; she herself is going to speak to Giles. Xander tells Spike to look after Buffy and he goes with Anya. Buffy watches Xander go. Buffy tells Spike that she can't face seeing Dawn like this; not again. Spike says there is nothing she can do. Buffy says that what annoys her so much. Spike says Dawn has grown up so much. Buffy says she knows. Buffy leans on Spike and closes her eyes. She says something about the soul.

Willow heads down the corridor and rushes of to the pay phones in the main corridor. Narayan watches Willow go before heading up the stairs.

Anya and Xander are in the library getting books. There is only silence. Anya tells Xander that she wants to be his friend; she doesn't want to lose that; she knows that his affections belong with Buffy - a part of her has always known that. Xander says that Buffy is his best friend. Anya reiterates the truth - this piece of conversation is basically to try and make Xander realise his true affections! Anya says that whatever happens with Dawn that Buffy will need his support; but if Xander ever needs support she'd like to be able to think Xander could come to him. Xander replies. Xander and Anya continue getting books. The power goes off. They rush back to the others.

Spike sits with Buffy asleep on his shoulder. Suddenly the power goes off. He gets up to investigate leaving Buffy to sleep. Spike heads out into the corridor. He ends up getting trapped in a locked room or lift shaft or something by Narayan.

Narayan walks up to Dawn who opens her eyes as Narayan is about to kill her - Dawn says behind you in Buffy's voice. Buffy launches herself at Narayan and they tumble through the windows onto the ground outside.

Spike stands at the doorway and then falls to the floor. Xander and Anya rush in. Xander rushes to the window. Suddenly Dawn starts convulsing.

ACT FOUR (by Jonny)
Narayan and Buffy are in a fight. Buffy pins Narayan to a wall/ground and asks why he is trying to kill Dawn. Narayan speaks in Byzantium. Willow realises this and tells Buffy. Buffy lets Narayan go. She asks why they want Dawn; Glory is dead. Narayan doesn't say anything. Buffy does something to make Narayan speak. He says that just cause the Key has been used once doesn't mean it won't be used again; a dark force is coming and prophecies say the Vessel with bring it forth; Buffy realises the vessel is Dawn. Buffy asks how they stop Dawn dying. Narayan says the monks that created Dawn by channelled ancient magics - he gives the name. Buffy looks to Willow. Buffy lets Narayan go and he runs off. At the doorway to where Buffy and Willow are is Xander carrying Dawn (with Spike and Anya).

Spike knocks out the window to a van and hot wires the van. He starts driving. Willow looks through the books (that Anya and Xander got) trying to find out where the temple of the ancient spirits are. Xander assures Buffy that Dawn will be okay. Dawn is convulsing. Buffy tells Xander that they haven't got long. She can feel everything Dawn feels' and visa-versa. Willow says she has found the location of the temple - in caves.

The van comes to a stop. Xander carries Dawn again. There are so many cave passages. Willow looks to the crystal and does a locator spell and a spirit appears which the gang follow into the cave. The gang reach the cave-temple; Willow decodes the writing and tells them to lie Dawn on a plinth (bathed in moonlight). Everyone else has to light candles around the edge of the cave and read out the inscription on the walls. After each person reads the inscription (btw Buff is holding Dawn's hand all through this). There is a flash.

It is the desert surrounded by deep red rock. It is day. Buffy is holding onto Dawn's hand. A spirit guide appears and asks Buffy why they have disturbed the ancients. Buffy says about Dawn. The spirit guide touches Dawn's face and gets a series of flashes of her past, present and future. The guide looks to Buffy and says the fate of the world may rest on the Vessel's shoulder. Buffy pleads with the spirit guide to help. The spirit guide says this is the way it was meant to be. Buffy says she has fought for so long; without Dawn she can't go on fighting. The spirit guide turns to Buffy and warns her that where there is light, dark may follow (referring to Dawn). The spirit guide walks away and Dawn gasps for air.

We flash back to the cave temple. Where Dawn opens her eyes and she starts to cry into Buffy's arms.

We return to the scene that started the episode. Buffy and Dawn are in front of the willow tree. Dawn is now doing a voice-over. She says that for long she has tried to come to terms knowing that her sister is different and that understanding her would be impossible. She says that her sister is that - she does the human things. She says she can be happy or sad feel hate and love� Dawn turns to Buffy. Dawn says for her sister to move on, the things that haunt Buffy's past need to be got rid of. Buffy steps up to her grave and she destroys it with the mallet.
