Tendrils had begun rising from it, even as it darkened. he was expecting the glowing blue disk of the temple's magic, not this nightmare which he did not wish to relive so soon after his experience with it at Aegis Fragments. A gauntlet appeared as from nowhere, followed by another, and then the rocky figure attached to both.

Cortex struggled to pull free as some of the tendrils of nothingness tried to reclaim the brief vistor. It took a moment for John to act, out of--comaraderie? chivalry?--out of whatever notion drove him. He offered his gauntleted hand and, as three gauntlets touched, experienced a surpising sense of oneness with Cortex--and vice versa. Braddock reasoned that it must be akin to the bond Fifth shared with Purge, and perhaps the kind all the Paleguard would one day have when they had worn the guantlets long enough and mastered them.

The bond between the two gauntlets and their worried sibling was strong though, and Braddock effortlessly pulled Cortex up as the shadows, with no more matter to feed upon, fed upon themselves and sealed. Cortex looked at Braddock(though with naught but a hard, encrsusted shell for a face, it was hard to tell), and then turned to survey the scenery. Soon the others would arrive. Soon the real challenge would begin...
