...and tried, but the fluid filled his lungs, so cold that it burned. As the liquid made contact with the cable snaring his leg, sparks flew wildly and the room was engulfed in a blinding flare. Gabriel Michaels breathed no more.

Before:

Gabe couldn't even LOOK at Wilson when he was like this.

"Braddock. You pulled Braddock. Really scraping now, aren't we?"

"John was a good man. Taking on Chris is the least I can do in his memory."

"True. However i have some concerns; the boy is an utter clumsy oaf. I don't want any of my guys getting accidentally shot by your man in exercises."

"And I don't want some hotshot like Grey crashing into any of my guys because his minds on that lady doc..."

"That's low, Chunky. And unconfirmed anyway. Grey's good; real good. I give him a year before making Lieutenant Junior Grade..."

"Whaaat? Lieutenant Junior Grade?! From ENSIGN? You're mad. Look, fact is, these boys're ready or they're not; it doesn't matter what old warhorses like us say. We can spout all the orders we want fueled by our experience; it's still them out there in the fray. If they die, they die."

"Ice in your veins, Chunky, that's what you have. Wait until your ass is in the fryer; we'll see how cool your demeanor is."

"Never happen, not once I get my promotion. I'll be putting my feet on Magnum's desk while you're still wiping ensign's noses."

"Rubbish. The man's cybernetically enhanced. Keep eating those Manarian brownies; we'll see if you live to see the day Ferris Magnum retires...."

...we'll see if you live to see the day...

...we'll see if you live...

...if you live...

...live...

Impossibly, Gabe began to open his eyes. It was difficult at first, icy residue crusting them shut, but somehow he found the strength of will to do so. He looked around at the mess of the lab, the scattered primate bones covered in ice, the cables and the equipment, everything in disarray and frozen or frosted. Gabe coughed hard, his chest stinging, but was mildly relieved to find he fell in the frosted not frozen category. He rubbed himself vigorously to warm up as he broke free from the slush he had been certain would be his tomb. A dawning realization crept upon him: he was going through the motion by reflex and not need.

"This is bad...if I don't feel cold, then I've gone numb! I have to get back up to the surface, heat up the metal and get my circulation going or I'm a goner!

Gabe looked about. The fluid which had frozen upon contact with the circuitry in the cable had sloshed across the room and upward, freezing the entrance shut. He would have to find another way.

That's when he heard the voices. Cautiously, he crept toward the open metal cylinder, not daring to enter what was nearly his tomb. Someone was shouting on the otherside of it though. No choice.

Gabe stepped into the cyclinder and pressed his ear against the back surface...
