Subject: I want one of every color... and with a brown wher, my collection will be complete. *glowy eyes*

Originally, I was going to have Janissa, and the wher, when she got it, would be Janisk. Then I realized that the Watchwher Hall is already flowing over with females, and so I decided to make the character male. I couldn't come up with a male variation of "Janis" other than Janis itself, so the wher will have to be Jask or Jansk. ^_^ Then I went through a lot of different ideas, but I kept coming back to the Miner thing - we don't actually HAVE any miners, and as this is char #20 I can't go and join one - but since I needed him to have a motivation to actually try for a wher, he's pretty young. Between Janis and Hale, we might actually get a mine dug without dropping it on our own heads. (Are there any rider-Miners out there?) And here ends the unnecessary exposition.

NAME: Janis
AGE: 26
GENDER: Male
DESCRIPTION: Average in height and build, Janis is more wiry than muscular, though don't let that fool you into thinking that he can't pick up a good hundred pounds in one go. His skin is a yellow-olive tone, and his straight, black hair falls to just above his shoulderblades and is usually held back with a tattered headband. His face is rather round, with a snub nose and an easy smile, and his narrow, tilted eyes are a muddy brown.
Dedicated and stubborn, Janis is determined to succeed in everything he does. He's very outspoken and enthusiastic, though he also possesses a respect for authority that will sometimes make him back down even when he knows he's right about something. He has lots of ideas, being easily inspired, but rarely follows through on them. On the other hand, the ones he does follow through on, he does so very thoroughly, devoting all of his considerable determination to making the idea a reality. When he does fail, he tends to take it badly, sinking into depression until something else comes along. He doesn't have much of a temper, but is hurt very easily, and tends to smile and agree in a half-hearted fashion instead of expressing either anger or hurt.
SKILLS: As a Journeyman Miner, Janis knows a bit about mining, though he's nowhere near an expert yet. He has a dim notion of what watchwhers are like, focusing primarily on their role in the mines. He's also fairly skilled at self-defense, and as a healthy young man, he can fetch and carry like you wouldn't believe.

BRIEF HISTORY: Janis was the son of a Master Miner, and therefore raised in the Craft; despite his dearest wishes, the Searchriders who sometimes visited their Hall said that he wasn't suitable material for Impression, which killed that dream in its infancy. Once he knew that he was destined to spend his life in his Craft, he devoted himself to study, and was one of the most remarked-upon Apprentices in the mine where he worked. Shortly after he walked the tables, alas, Thread reappeared and the disasters shook the earth, and the CraftHall's organization collapsed. Seperated from his family by his Apprenticeship (as his father, quite sensibly, had wanted to avoid any insinuations of nepotism), Janis at first tried to find them, but as time went on he lost hope of success and focused on survival. Eventually, he was picked up by a dragonrider who took pity on him (and, being a green rider, had another interest in him as well that he was not at ALL adverse to encouraging), and eventually ended up at New Isle Weyr. She lost interest in him shortly afterwards, but that was fine with Janis, who soon met a fascinating old wher-handler (who was going to join the others he'd heard about as soon as Halsk was ready to go, yes indeed, and wasn't this wine just wonderful?) who knew a fair dab about mining himself and was happy to encourage Janis' growing interest in the notion of watchwhers. After all, there are no Miners here, but there are wher-handlers, and watchwhers can do a lot for a mine....
