In addition, I think what makes Alexander and Jamie stand out is that when they love others (i.e. not just the heroine), they do so at great personal cost. Despite their tortured history, they're still giving and giving.

Although many other heroes are like this, I can't pinpoint exactly what it is about Alexander that puts him on top. Maybe the setting had a lot to do with it, as his heroism during wartime clearly shined through. Plus--am I crazy?--I just loved the way he gets angry. Remember that scene when Tatia goes back to Leningrad against his wishes, so she could be near him? I think that's his angriest moment. His temper is formidable and yet, he couldn't bring himself to lay a hand on Tatia so he ends up punching the wall instead. And mostly he only gets angry when Tatia does something that's detrimental to herself.
