You guys need to remember something while you're constructing a rosy, happy, IMMEDIATE reunion for Shura and Tatia: this was the Soviet Union in the '40s. Given the realism of the rest of the book, I can't really see any *easy* way out for the pair (which is not to say that I can't see *any* way out). And given that he was such a realist about everything else, I cannot imagine that Shura expected to live more than a day or two once the NKVD came for him.

I must say, I'm stunned and gratified that a book whose review appeared so long ago is still generating such response, from so many of you. I'm just so glad y'all enjoyed it!
