for your replies...It drives me nuts when I can't figure out something symbolic like that. I forgot the part about watching the curator packing up his treasures. All I could remember was when they were saying goodbye at their cabin that Tatiana said she was watching all her wooden crates descend the ramp from the Winter Palace. It's a little hard to go back thru 652 pages and find some obscure reference.

What both of you said makes sense. What a powerful book. CANNOT wait for the sequel!!
