Subject: About Role Playing Games such as Skoki [from the viewpoint of a 14-year old]

I can understand why you might worry about your daughter's role-playing, especially since she won't let you see it, but there are many reasons why I believe that you should look a little closer at Skoki before making a decision. I believe that the best way that I can express these reasons is by sharing my own experiences, because my love of RPGs is what I know the most about.
About a year ago, at the beginning of my summer vacation between eighth and ninth grade, I was checking the guestbook of my (at the time) tiny little website when I found an entry by someone who asked if I would please check out their RPG. I had no idea what an RPG was, but I went to their site out of curiousity - and as soon as I looked at the message boards, I knew that this was what I had been looking for all along.
I had visited chatrooms occasionally in the past, but I found them boring and full of people who made up characters (who, frighteningly, seemed to all the clones) that they pretended were their true selves. All the same, I occasionally went back because I longed to meet different and interesting people, and I kept hoping that one might stumble in there.
On the RPGs, though, people don't hide the fact that their characters are pure imagination - that's the point! And you can often talk normally while playing out your character (that's what OOC stands for - Out Of Character) and in doing so I've met some of the most creative, imaginative people out there, and formed some really strong friendships in and out of character.
Also, when you're playing a character, you can often make them say or do things that you never would in real life. For example, a really quiet, shy girl could make a character that's loud and outgoing, and a hyper, open person could create a character that's mysterious and secreative. This stretches people's imaginations and helps to form creative-writing skills from points of view other than their own.
It also makes you think of how to be unique and pay attention to detail, which I had to do right away. Sky Rain, my wolf character, was originally going to to be black, but when I looked around I saw that a good precentage of the wolves were black too, and I came up with something a little different.
And RPing has taught me one of the most valuable skills possible - knowledge of HTML, which is something that nobody else in my family has. That is absolutely the thing I'm proudest to know, and I've built almost my entire website by writing straight HTML. And I learned the basics on a role-playing game when I asked someone how they changed the color of their message.
In conclusion, role-playing games are ways of formulating relationships, taking chances without any possibility of getting hurt, and increasing creativity and the ability to think ahead. As someone suggested, you should ask your daughter to share her world with you.

You just might learn something new.

<LEFT>
