I guess that most of the people who will be in DC are not readers, it's smarter to post. Thanks for the suggestion, Marl. So here it is. (Transcription by David Sartorius.)

Dear Mr. Sartorius:
I'm really thrilled that you liked The Evolution of Jane, but even more thrilled that you recognized and know about Edward [sic] Atkins. I was doing research for the book, just reading memoirs and letters randomly picked out of the card catalog of The New York Public Library. I can't actually remember how much his life inspired Edwin's, but I think his journal or letters, whatever it was I read, was the work I found truly compelling. I remember the details that struck me, but I'm no longer sure if they were Atkin's [sic] descriptions or someone else's. Apples being sent to him by his mother. Stuff like that. And I realize as I write this that I can no longer remember what I made up about Edwin and what was suggested by Atkins. Ah well. This is why I left graduate school and did not become a historian. I can't keep anything straight. I have an impressionistic, shall we say, memory. In other words, a poor memory. But, yes, that's Edward Atkins you recognized. If you're interested, I could dig back through my notes and try to find what exactly it was I read by him. I think I remember a photograph, too. But maybe I'm conflating two documents. Sorry I'm so vague about this. It was a while ago.
Good luck in your work. I find that period and place fascinating--exotic but oddly familiar and American. If you need to get in touch with me, the best way is email. My address is cschine@excite.com.
Sincerely . . .
