Following the Equator definitely makes for episodic reading. I'm afraid my pick for the next book may not be so smooth: Blindness, by Jose Saramago. I promise that I won't always pick dreary books of millenial angst, but this one has been on my list for a long time, and people I know from across the spectrum (including my friend's hairdresser) have liked it a lot. Saramago is Portuguese, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. Given the perils of translation, I think we should all stay true to the novel and read it in the original Portuguese. Agreed?

OK, just shitting you. The English paperback edition looks really cool. Marl and Chris, do you want to go ahead and pick yours in the next week or so, so that I can take the books with me to Spain?

[Nerdy footnote: The "j" in Portuguese is not pronounced like an "h" as it is in Spanish. It's a "jh" sound, like Zsa Zsa (Gabor). So if you really hate the novel, you can at least revel in how extremely sexy Jose Saramago's name sounds.]
