In book for then Dumbledore was convinced Snape was safe despite him being a death eater in the last reign of Voldermort. Snape hated James Potter (Harry's Dad) I reckon because Snape had a crush on Lilly Potter but she loved James. This was why he stopped being a death eater. Because he was so angry she died.
