If you want a beta spot, and both female and male positions are open, you could ask the alpha and usually they will let you have it, unless they already have someone in mind. If you want an alpha spot, you could ask, but usually the alpha would ask somebody if they believed they were worthy. You could fight somebody if you really want the position....its all up to you! Does that answer your question?
