HI, i'm new here.
Just a quick message on me, i am 16 and a strong christian from New zealand.
I Run a forum for my friends on the internet, and it is full of intelligent religious discussion.
I am surrounded by athiests, and sometimes i find it hard to rebut their huge questions, but i'm coping.
So i wondered wot you guys thought of a few questions that they brought up.
one of them said this...i managed to rebut it, but i was wondering wot others thought of it:
"For me, the very foundation of Christianity is retarded, what seperates Christians from Jews, when put in perspective is ludicrous.
God saw that the world was fucking itself over, right? Never mind that he KNEW THIS when he went to create it. He is all powerful, so what does he do? You'd think he would just MAKE IT BETTER. But oh no, he decides that he will come down to Earth in the form of a human, then get nailed to a post for reasons known only to himself. For what? To show that he sympathises with his subjects, that he can suffer as well? This is the equivalent of me seeing a starving child on the side of the road, then going "oh, don't worry little fella, I feel your pain" and ramming my fist into a brick wall repeatedly. It does neither of us any good. It is utter foolishness.
Really, I just cannot fathom, I just cannot, how any sane person can cast a critical eye over the Bible and not think it at least slightly bizarre. The folk tales, the reasoning, it's like reading a five year olds story. I can understand that believing in it is about faith, but faith aside, you have to admit that the whole system of Christianity is really, on the face of it, a load of unnecessary bollocks."

Hello Zach! when it comes to understanding atheists, I noticed you seem to make the same mistake a lot of christians make about atheists, you think we all think alike. think of it this way, if you were to do a survey of "men who DON'T wear boots," the first guy you interview may not wear boots because for him they are uncomfortable so he only wears sandals. so you mistakingly assume ALL men who don't wear boots only wear sandals, because boots hurt their feet! then the next guy you interview does not wear boots or sandals because he thinks they are ugly! he only wears tennis shoes or loafers. then the next guy does not wear boots because they are too heavy, but he wears sandals, tennis shoes, or loafers. the only thing these men have in common is they don't wear boots! they are not a part of a club they don't have the same opinions of fashion, they don't even have the same reason for not wearing boots! they just DON'T wear boots.
Maybe you met an atheist who believe in the big bang theory, maybe you met an atheist who says the bible is full of contradictions, or that life just happened by chance. but you can't assume that about all atheists, I don't know if the bible contradicts itself, but there are some behaviors that the bible condones that I feel is immoral. like rape,(Numbers 31:18)or Human Sacrafice, (the plan of salvation). There are other examples of the bible making impossible claims, like Joahna being swallowed by a Whale and then vomiting him out after 3 days and he is just fine? a whales digestive system would make that impossible! or the entire world being flooded,with no effect on the fresh water life and the salt water life, and somehow all the Kangaroos and Kola bears made it to Australia and the penguines some how made it to the north pole, and all that inbreeding of the animals had no effect! beside, if the whole world was flooded at one time geologist would be able to determine that. the bible has some extraordinary claims, and as they say, "Extraordinary claims require Extraordinary evidence! and there is NO evidence that any of that stuff happened. You also mentioned that you find the fact that atheist don't have faith funny? Faith is an ASSERTION of belief without evidence/proof! most atheists don't assert any kind of belief, we just lack a belief in any kind of God, just as you probably lack belief in santa clause.
I've noticed a lot of Christians seem to be shocked when they find out that atheists dismiss their religion, yet they will dismiss the Muslum, the Hindu, or the Confucius religions as fraudulant. When you can understand how you can so easily dismiss the existance of all the other Gods out there, maybe you can then understand how I can dismiss the existance of yours.

Many Christians are convinced that pedophiles are writers for the show "Malcom In The Middle". I was wondering if this could be true. I mean, what is the likelyhood that a group of pedophiles organized a show for pedophiles?! Considering the scenes from some of the shows, it seems almost certain that no one else would think of a line, or theme, or camera angle, unless one was interested in boys!

First off, why would anyone want to see a show all about boys? It seems odd that the whole ENTIRE show revolves around these boys' dayly lives. I mean, some shows are all about men...some are all about sex and woman, some all about a family...but M.I.T.M. is all about boys. Is this a fluke or mere coincidence? Or was this planned out and organized by pedophile writers and producers. It is hard to believe that a hererosexuall man is writing the show! Especially the how so many of the scenes revolve around pedophile moments.

I want to address some major points I have read about in this forum:

You state that you need to have faith to be an athiest. That is absurd. If you don't believe in Santa Claus, does that mean you have faith that he does not exist? Athiesm is an absence of faith, a method of reasoning and looking at religous dogma and questioning it - not assuming absolute authority. Please don't attempt to twist the word faith around, since it is the religious people in the world who have to contend with it, not the athiests.

Religon served two major functions in ancient times: 1. to instill moral values into uneducated people in hopes of maintaining order, and 2. to answer the the people's unanswered questions about the earth and sky, of life and death. Now we have many of the real answers to these questions, we have governments to maintain order, and the religions of the world have lost much of their authority as a result.

Athiesm is liberating in many ways. For one, it frees one from the fear of eternal damnation, the fear of being punished for your own thoughts. It allows you to look at many relgions with an open mind, and to extract knowledge and wisdom wherever it may be found. It frees you to focus your time on productive efforts, rather than attending services, pryaing, and worrying about where your soul will go when you die.

Finally, all religions of the world survive by maintaining their congregations. If religion was, as many greats have contended, a truly personal relationship between man and god, then their is truly no need for organized religion. Those with great wisdom would become known, and people would seek them out to get their knowledge. There would be no need for churches, pomp and circumstance, and the like.

To me a person's belief's should be personal - I do not want them pushed on me by my gov't, my neighbor, or the smiling teenager on the street corner with the pamphlets.

If religion was a truly personal quest, no one would have a problem with it, and there would be no great tragedies like history has seen.

I want to address some major points I have read about in this forum:

You state that you need to have faith to be an athiest. That is absurd. If you don't believe in Santa Claus, does that mean you have faith that he does not exist? Athiesm is an absence of faith, a method of reasoning and looking at religous dogma and questioning it - not assuming absolute authority. Please don't attempt to twist the word faith around, since it is the religious people in the world who have to contend with it, not the athiests.

I was just reading through the site, and I found it amazing that so many of these 'believers' are so quick to deny the thought of there being no god, which has scientific evidence backing it, yet it is easy for them to simply believe in something as far-fetched as greater being. It's almost like saying they believe in superman, santa claus, of the tooth-fairy. What I don't understand, and someone please explain to me if you know, is how anyone can find it reasonable to believe and put so much faith into someone or something they have no proof about, have never met or even seen. Its as if they are sheep being led around blindly saying yes to any idea thrown at them. Do you realize that if any one of the hundreds of religions actually was correct, more than half the world would be damned to hell? To me that does not seems like a god very worthy of anyone's time and effort. Its strange that so many of you believers look down on Atheist, when in fact they have more intelligence than any one of you could even hold, simply because they are wise enough to see through all the lies of the church, bible, torah, whatever is your preference. The Catholic church, or any organized religion for that matter, is no more than a cult, blindly leading people around and telling them they need to pray, worship, confess and most of all, give them money. So for all you believers out there, I pity you for wasting your lives on something so apparently illogical.

I have some questions on some things and I decided to come here, b/c I'm too afraid to ask someone I know. I have grown up in the Assembly of God church (I'm 19 years old), but I have recently started going to the Church of Christ. I was always taught that you can take communion as long as you are saved. Just the other day I heard someone at the Church of Christ say that you are not supposed to take communion unless you are baptised. (I have never been baptised because at the Assembly of God I went to, there hasn't been any baptisms since 10 or more years ago and I wasn't ready back then.) I have taken communion at both of the churches and no one has said that I am doing wrong. I'm worried about bringing up the fact that I am not baptised to my friends at the Church of Christ, because I have taken communion. Is this a problem? Or should I not worry about it anymore? Also, I'm still really confused on the whole Baptism thing... do you have to be baptised to go to Heaven? Obviously I never got the answers I needed while growing up in this church. Can someone help me answer my questions? Thank you!

Ummm...what does the Bible say about incest and those people who are born out of it? I ask this because I am a child who's parents are brother and sister. My father when he was 18 ran away with my mother, his sister when she was 14. I have grown up in a very loving house where they have taught me right and wrong. But we never went to church because my dad says that he did something very wrong when he was younger and that God doesn't like us. So we never went. Other than that, my life is pretty normal. I'm 15 and I'm a freshman in high school. I get A's and B's on ,y report cards. I'm fairly athletic and I'm pretty good looking if I do say so myself. All things considered what is so bad about Me and my family? Why would god hate us?
