You can only send a full 53-man roster to camp.

However, ever since the first season or two we've used the "non-camp protected roster" which are essentially players you cut before camp, but you have the first option to re-sign before anyone else can claim them as a free agent.

It's a way to allow you to bring in more of your draft picks while retaining the right to play your veterans (who probably won't improve as much in camp as the young guys.) A compromise measure since we can't use the expanded rosters the real leagues use.

If I remember right, the protected list is usually 3-5 players, and they have to be from different positions. Paul should be announcing this right after the draft is complete.
