Subject: Hopes for peace

I wanted to express my hopes and prayers for the homeless of the world, not just the Holy land. I wanted to express my hopes and prayers that working for peace will lead to an environment where we can all help each other without fearing reprisals for assisting others.

I remember a friend several years ago, Mohammed H. He and I spent much time sharing our experiences of growing up. He had been born in Jerusalem, and I in Cincinnati. He wished for a childhood that would have given his father the opportunities he found in the US, I wished for a connection with ancient kings.

I remember having to tell a mother of the death of her son in an accident. There was no way to minimize her grief, but the words needed to be spoken. Her pain was the same of any parent losing a child unexpectedly.

I remember coming to an accident scene only to be forced to wait for the death of the unconscious victim. Did my presence help? I have no idea. This is much like my hopes for peace. I ask does any of this matter?

I return to hope. Hope historically taught in what has been called a "collective cultural history of a people."

I mourn those that have died. Their "side" does not matter. The ideas that lead someone to take their own life while trying to kill and injure are not the responsibility of the ones that die. I mourn for a world in which there are so many that replace hope with hate, love with fear, and life with death.

I look into the eyes of all children and hope for them to know the joy of their own children playing, and the sound of children's laughter.

Pray with me so we can work to restore hope. Hope is the first step. Without it, people will not have the strength or desire to do more. Once enough try to do something, things will change.

You have my hope for peace,

Bob Schwab
