Jacob had twelve sons from four wives. The descendants of these sons form the separate tribes.

Six sons from his first wife Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Issachar, Levi, and Zebulun

Two from Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin

Two from Zilpah: Gad and Asher

Two from Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali

Apparently the tribal identities were kept during slavery in Egypt. When Joshua led them into Canaan, the land was divided into sections for each tribe., Joseph's descendants received a double portion, and two tribes were named after his two sons Ephraim and Menashe. Levi received no land, and were assigned certain cities in which to live.

The Jewish State split in two after Solomon's death; ten tribes formed the northern kingdom of Israel, 2 tribes formed the southern kingdom of Judah. In 722 BCE the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom scattering the ten tribes. From then on modern Jews are said to be descendants of either the Levites of Judah. Because the larger tribe was Judah, the people were Judah-ites. This would become the root for the word "Jew."
