The pilgrim festivals were busy times. But there were those that never got to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices. There had to be ways for them to be made part of the religion.

Of course making sacrifices was not free. Those without the means could live at the Temple and never offer them. Then there were those that could only offer the meagerest of sacrifices )because that is all they could afford).

To believe that sacrifice was everything, commits these people to a lesser status in Judaism. There are no teachings to justify this idea. Of course the priests would create their own writings to make sacrifice more of a focal point.

Here is an example: This year I wored at the Kaporos service. I handled, plucked, cleaned, sectioned and packed the chickens. I could not afford to buy a chicken. Was my offering of service less desireable? How about the chickens rendered treif at no fault of those that purchased them?

In Judaism all do as they can. I say to you that this is the same now as it had been then. Some people draw lines and put people on one side or the other. This is not the words of the religion itself. God is waiting to forgive, and allow us back into the fold.
