Subject: It's Not 1983 Anymore . . .

Since the board's so quiet, I thought I'd pass along this tidbit. I was at a grocery store here in Houston this weekend, dutifully wearing my Made In Detroit t-shirt. At the checkout, the checker, probably a bit older than me, said, "The Romantics! My God, I haven't heard that name in years. They're old, old, old, old." Because I've been called on my pronouncements before about an upcoming album, and as I was really not in the mood to let her know that they've still been chugging along, I didn't say anything except, "Great rock and roll never gets old."

I guess without really thinking about it, I also summed up my thoughts on the unreleased new album. As with my feelings about my other "old" favorite bands (The Beatles, The Producers and The Replacements), the music is what keeps them going for me. If a new album does come out, great. If it doesn't, that's ok too. It won't lessen my support of The Romantics and their music, and I'll go see them when I can. I'll still play the King Biscuit cd to get a rush, and I'll still wear my t-shirt on occasion. I don't really feel like they owe me anything for my support, but I understand the frustation about the forthcoming, but as yet un-arrived new album.

Oh yeah, I also thought to myself as I had the conversation with that checker, "I'll bet at least the 'old' Romantics still have all of their collective teeth."
