I just got back from Iowa State Thespian festival, where I auditioned for a performance scholarship. Those of you familiar with my site (a href="http://home.dencity.com/beguile">http://home.dencity.com/beguile/ --a little shameless self-promotion never hurt anyone) may remember a piece I wrote called "Telling Kevin." I auditioned on it. I also mentioned in my resume that I'm writing a play called "Jonas and Ezekial" (it's a working title, and I've never been good at titles anyway, so leave me alone, okay?!) for International Thespian Festival (where there is a playwriting comepetition--for publication!!!!). Anyway, I got grilled by about twenty adjudicators, and one of the questions was "If you had to choose between acting and writing, what would you choose?"
I'm sure I had a deer-in-the-headlights look on my face for a couple of seconds. Remember, I was auditioning at what is primarily an ACTING audition. Finally, I decided on the truth and said, "Well, I'd have to think long and hard about it. But at this point in my life, I would choose writing."
This is about the time the smart part of my brain kicked in and said, "Lopatto, you shit, what were you thinking?!"
And I was kicking myself when the results were announced. Usually, only three scholarships are given. However, after those three had been announced, a man came forward and said, "We at blah blah blah Costume Shop are giving a brand-new scholarship this year to a very impressive lady from troupe number 4274--Liz Lopatto."
Well, I was sitting there. And I sat there for another couple seconds while my friends went nuts. Then it dawned on me that yes, I did get the scholarship. So I walked up to the stage, accepted it, went back to my friends, hugged everyone in arm's reach and promptly called my parents.
I love happy endings. Especially when I'm involved.
Moral of story: Writing will get you places.
Other moral of story: Honesty, while not necessarily the best policy, will win you scholarships.
