RE: English subtitles for TV shows A SENSIBLE MOVE!

(I refer to the report by Gary Cheung English subtitles for TV Shows would sharpen language skills posted today) Further more to the tremendous effort in hiring overseas (ie. foreign) ESL teachers and sluggish progress in improving local ESL teachers standards, this has been the most sensible and probably the most economical move to assist students and all others who are interested in improving English in HK. Since weve known the strong influence of TV in our lives, especially during after and before- school hours of our children, I cant agree more w/ Mr. Tiens proposal and Dr. Cheungs comments.

As an ESL teacher, my experience with most secondary students is that they cannot understand most English TV programs without subtitles unless they see them repeatedly or spoken in abnormal/unreal slow speed. It is simply natural for us to select the language that we can comprehend without much effort visually or aurally when choices are given. Since there is already Nicam choices for most primetime programs, I believe that those who cannot understand English can choose Cantonese/PTH if they need to. Therefore, English subtitles shouldnt deprive them from enjoying those programs.

Think of our younger generations and lets do something now! I totally support this proposal and I hope to see English subtitles on TV shows soon.
