This is good news for all the displaced ppl living at the camp. I visited the camp way back in 1996, it was a hearbreaking visit. I'm pleased that this has happened.

Birth Certificates Issued to Indonesia Refugees in Papua New Guinea

A registration campaign by PNG authorities and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has seen over 1,200 birth certificates issued to refugees born in PNG and currently living in East Awin, Western Province. This is the first time birth certificates have been issued to refugees born in the country, and is a significant step in this country where only 3 per cent of the general population have their births registered.

"The birth certificate gives refugees a legal identity and a secure future," said Johann Siffointe, UNHCR's representative in PNG. "By establishing the legal identity of a person, birth certificates can help refugees open bank accounts, get travel document and even apply for citizenship," he said. He added that birth registration process could help to plan education and health service for refugee population.

The newly registered refugees are children of people who fled Iran Jaya 20 years ago and make up about half of the population of 2,500 refugees living in 16 settlements in remote East Awin.
