Paying of bride price is an act which symbolises the coming together of a man and woman as a single entity. I am certainly not in a position to comment on the issue of virginity. In all practical realities it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine who is a virgin and who is not. This is true for both man and woman. Perhaps, the main concern should be, if a woman has had a divorce in the past and probably has a child or two, then bride price payment might not necessarily be an issue.i.e, there would be a natural or mutual understanding of the type of people who are now trying to come together. Under such instances, I think it is incumbent on the man either to pay or not to pay. On the other hand, I dont think the woman's people would be anticipating such a payment. However, if a woman is single (virgin or not), bride price payment must be effected so as to give meaning to some of the features I highlighted on my previous posting. Basically, the definition of the words would depend on where one sits on this debate, but the commercial connotation attributed to bride price payment as applied in a cultural context is completely demeaning to what the practice stands for.
