Subject: And now for something completely different-

John Tredrea's 10/31/07 post, of Al Parker's Comparative Weights and Measures, shows a Portuguese foot as 1.0774731 larger than a British or American foot.

Teemu's site lists a Portuguese foot as being .9118341 that of an British or American foot.

The sites I found on the net, for historical Portuguese feet, showed a figure of 1.0933071 times a British or American foot.

All of this is very confusing when attempting to obtain the BM tonnage of Portuguese vessels.

Finally, page 73 of Tres Seculos No Mar, III Parte/Fragatas/Volume 2, lists the dimensions of the Princesa Do Brasil in both Portuguese feet and meters. When the two are compared, it would make the Portuguese foot come out to 1.082675 times a British or American foot. If that figure is correct, it would make some Portuguese ships very large for their class.

By this information, I am not assuming any of the figures are more correct than the rest, but I would like to see some comment on this.
