There is evidence that the line of battle was used in 1639 by Dutch admiral Tromp (an informal line), and by 1653 the English used a form of line against the Dutch in the begining of the last two battles (Gabbard and Scheveningen).
Those battle were not as the Battle of the Saintes (1782) or others much later. They tried to used lines of battle, but for short time and when weather conditions permited.
