Darkness, carried along with thick and sudden fog, descends upon the crowded trees of the forest as the sun dips below the horizon, dragging away the blood-red of the sky to be replaced with impenetrable sable night. Swirls of mist dampen visibility even beyond what the shadows permit. One by one, the stars, travelling through the sky with no moon to guide them, blink out, moments before the fog washes overhead, blocking out any view of the sky above that may be left. As if muted by the earth-bound clouds and newly fallen night, even the chirping nocturnal creatures fall silent, leaving behind only an eerie hush. In the lull, every snapping twig and whispering breeze seems perilously loud. A girl's scream, as if from a distance, shatters the stillness for a brief moment; then all is as it was, but with a slightly chillier feel.
