Subject: Angel 5/20- "The Girl in Question" *SPOILERS*

First, let me say that if you're going to set an episode around a certain character, and the actor who plays her has said NFW to any reprise, it might be best to re-think the whole thing. Because, really, having *Andrew* give half-assed advice on love because SMG won't do guest shots... lame. Very, very lame.

And no, he wasn't supposed to be there all along, because he gave his final "sage" monologue from behind a closed door, which suggests to me that during filming they realized whatever that had wasn't going to work, and sent the second unit to film just the closed door while they did a quick re-write and had Tom Lenk come in to lay in some over-tracks, because, really, *he's* not promoting stupid movie sequels starring cartoon dogs. And the whole thing wouldn't be bothering me so much if they hadn't so firmly established that Andrew was a socially-stunted buffoon the last two seasons of Buffy. So, what? he moves to Europe and buys a tux and suddenly he's Dr. Phil? No. Sorry. Not buying it, even out of the discount bin. And dating two hot Italian babes? Only if he's The Immortal in disguise.

On the other hand, if we could surgically excise the whole Buffy subplot, we have something. Something as light and insubstantial as a balloon, but I'm willing to go with that since it looks like the final episodes are pretty heavy.

To sum up: Buffy subplot- lame. Demon head subplot- funny. Illyria/Fred subplot- rough and heartbreaking, in a good way.

To elaborate: I'm still loving the Spike and Angel interaction. They could have still bickered about The Immortal and had great flashbacks without involving Buffy, and I think that would have worked better. Oh, and Angelus never had Darla and Dru "concurrently"? In thirty years? Not buying that, either. I also need an lj icon with 50s Italian Spike and Dru. Brilliant throwaway.

Illyria-Fred? Wow. I've actually been impressed by Amy Acker. Not bowled over, but impressed. Of course, all her flashy back and forth is completely outclassed by Alexis giving his voice just the slightest break when Mrs. Burkle asks if everything is alright, but anyone working with him should probably get used to that.

The Italian branch of W&H (or is that WeH?)? Great, funny stuff. The Italian CEO was slightly over the top, but her gravity-defying breasts kept me sufficiently distracted. Seriously. I was fascinated. It was like watching a lava lamp.

Okay, it was a trifle of an episode, but it was a shiny, glittery trifle. I doubt it will mean much, in the end, but for an hour it was fun.

And one last thing. Since when is Nina the Werewolf Angel's "girlfriend"? The last we heard from her, Angel-Puppet was taking her to breakfast. Very out-of-nowhere, plus it possibly screws up my latest fic series. Dammit.

I'm willing to give them the non-Buffy appearance, because I think they needed to address both Spike and Angel's longing for her. Plus, anything that leads to Angel's rant about the Immortal eating Buffy's cookie dough is golden in my book. I was in hysterics through that, and Spike's pursed brows and half-double takes only made it better.

My theory on Andrew - he's embraced his homosexuality, and is the fabulous gay friend of those girls.

I agree about W&H-Roma's Bosoms of Doom. I couldn't take my eyes off of her cleavage either. And her spitting at the mentions of gypsies! OMG.

I was devestated by Wesley and pseudo-Fred. The way he told her not to do that again broke my heart. He's so strong, but so broken. And I'm amazed at how much more I like Illyria than I ever like Fred.

Haven't seen the episode, since I taped it and watched the "Dateline" special on "Friends." I look forward to ogling the gravity-defying Bosoms of Doom, though. Do we see Nina, or is she only mentioned? I have to keeop track of my WhedonVerse objects of letchery.

I came to like Andrew, as opposed to your less sanguine feelings about him - plus, I can buy Pouncer's take on him above.

Pretty sure I'll think the longshot views of Stand-In Wearing Blonde Wig will look of the cheese, but I can see why they felt the subject needed to be addressed. I still say that, based on his work in "Gilmore Girls," they should have hired Sebastian Bach to play Buffy. That would have been memorable.

if you can't have SMG, don't have Buffy.

Spike and Angel were hysterical, as was the CEO of Italy's W&H.

Can't buy Andrew as a tuxedoed man around town. Too too creepy.

AA impressed me, for the first time.

i viewed this episode as the typical, last stand-alone, humorous episode before the big, dramatic final episodes.

the angel/spike relationship continues to be the highlight of the season. i think it would have been more effective to have them chase buffy but never actually see her at all instead of seeing the back of her head on the dance floor.

the italian ceo was in a word...outstanding! and she was pretty funny too...

this is just my theory but i looked at tuxedo suave andrew as merely a metephor for angel and spike. when they realized he was right about moving on from buffy, in their eyes he had become a different person. if not, then i'm going to second pouncer's theory...

the illyria/fred thing wigged me out a little and i have to give a.a. credit for a good job but it was wesley who made it as powerful as it was...

as for the previews, i am a little concerned about angel having to deceive his friends, yet again... there are 2 episodes left, do we need them to go down that path one more time???

I agree with this:

"i think it would have been more effective to have them chase buffy but never actually see her at all instead of seeing the back of her head on the dance floor."

Nice idea about Andrew as metaphor, too.
