Subject: Angel 5/22- "Not Fade Away" *SPOILERS*

Did I like it?

Well, like may not be the best word. It didn't make me giddily happy. I can't imagine I'll watch it over and over (though I'll probably watch it a couple of times more.) Perhaps the better question is, was it a satisfying conclusion?

To which I say, hell yeah.

Yes, it was dark (although I've figured a way out for fanfic purposes already), but Angel has always been a much darker show. Even when Angel succeeds, there is underlying sadness; the victory is never triumphant. So I felt it fitting that the show end with our heroes' backs against the wall, with what appears to be all of hell bearing down on them.

It reminded me of another cult favorite, which most of you probably don't know (although I'll bet Simon does, and possibly Max), Blake's Seven, where much of the cast was slain except for anti-hero Avon, who, when the show faded out to final credits, was surrounded by four gunman at point-blank range.

But back to Angel:

I liked that everyone knew the battle might be their last, and for at least two, it was. Lorne, by choice, Wesley... possibly also by choice.

Not to mention Lindsay's death. A shock, but I can see why Angel et al. found it necessary. Lindsay has never been trustworthy, and has exposed himself to be a real danger in their midst. He is evil, clearly, but even more, he is treacherous. Like the snake in the old story, he would allow himself to be taken in, then he would bite with a shrug, asking, "what did you expect?" I find it interesting that Lorne was chosen to pull the trigger, but it was perfectly within character for it to devastate him to have to do so. I hope he is able to find peace wherever he goes.

Wesley's death was unutterably sad, I think because his character since coming to Angel, but very much the past two seasons, has had an almost fatalistic quality about himself. He does what needs to be done, sacrificing all of himself for the greater good, to the point where when given one last day, he can think of nothing to do for himself.

In such a context, his death was inevitable, the natural end to a journey he's been on for years.

I will say, though, that Illyria "being" Fred seriously pissed me off. "You'll be with me," was not a loving lie, but a cruel one, as I'm sure even near death Wesley is aware that Fred isn't anywhere. Her soul was destroyed. Maybe the writers don't quite understand what that means, but while Wesley may go on to his reward, Fred will not be waiting for him. For that reason alone I will never accept Illyria as sympathetic, and to have her console a character I really do care about is insulting. And the worst part is, I don't think Joss and the writers have any idea they've done such a thing.

That being said, excellent job Alexis, as always. A fitting end to a remarkable character.

Spike at the poetry slam: accepted at last. Nice way to bring the character full circle.

Gunn at the homeless shelter: It was nice to see he's kept in touch, and although they've missed a lot of possibilities with this character, I think he ended as he'd like.

Angel, and son: I sort of wish they hadn't answered the question about Connor knowing, but I'm glad he and Angel were able to end in a good place. If Angel didn't make it out alive, I can see Connor carrying on his legacy in some way. I also find it satisfying that Angel signed away his Shanshu, which has so dominated his actions, for the greater good of the world. In a way, it was a greater sacrifice than risking his life.

And one more favorite moment:

Angel: One of you will betray me.
Spike: Can it be me?
Angel: Wesley...
Spike: Can I deny you three times?

You're totally spoiled now!

I don't think that will diminish your enjoyment of the episode, though.

I was totally spoiled for this episode and it made no difference at all to my enjoyment of it. It was amusing and oddly comforting to see just how misleading the spoilers were, as usual: they can only recount facts, they can't convey tone or subtlety. In this regard, the spoilers for both Wesley and Harmony were both accurate and totally misleading. Needless to say, what Joss actually did was infinitely better than what the spoilers suggested he'd done. And, as far as the people who spent the last few weeks either working themselves into a lather of anger over what Joss was doing to these poor characters, or who spent the same time gloating about how the spoilers "proved" every bad thing they'd ever said about Joss: Ha!! Ha ha!!

I was so curious and and and...I just checked the site every 5 minutes to see if you haven't posted yet.

I'm really looking forward to that episode - I think we're seeing it "The Girl in Question" tonight.
