Subject: I like winter...

I get through it by wearing my purple coat and a hat and gloves. And drinking coffee, tea and hot chocolate. And sweaters...I love wearing sweaters.

Warm winter tales.

I arrived in Los Angeles on December 5, 1981. That would mark the onset of winter in my native Ohio, but on that happy December day, I dropped off my few belongings at my cousin's mansion in Bel-Air (another fun story for another time) and drove a few blocks to Westwood, home of UCLA, John Wooden, and the mighty Bruins basketball history. After parking my car at a meter on the street, I got out to be greeted by the sight of hundreds of tanned, relaxed-looking Angelenos, clad in T-shirts and shorts, happily strolling the sidewalks in the 80 degree sun, under the bright blue sky. My exact thought upon seeing this was, "Well, all right!"

Several years later, I received news from my sister that her marriage was ending, but until it was officially done she would be required to remain in Kansas, where she and her husband lived, and which was at that moment locked in its usual frigid January deathgrip. I was happy to have a chance to pay back some small portion of all the great things my sister had done for me when I was growing up by sending her a plane ticket to LA and putting her up in my apartment for a week. During that time, we devoted ourselves to lying on the sand at Santa Monica beach, soaking up the sun and lolling indolently in the warmth. The high point was when a Valley Girl spotted my blindingly white skin and walked acroos a good thirty feet of beach to ask, in utterly sincere amazement, "Are you from England???" I explained that, no, I was just really pale.

Funnily enough, I loved winter when I was a kid, and I find that I still enjoy cold weather and snow when I'm visiting some place that gets a real winter. This winter I count myself particularly lucky, having seen snow twice, first in Ohio at Thanksgiving and then again in Philadelphia in December. My only concern at this age would be getting myself to and from work. If they work had snow days, like school does, I'd be all set.

Ya gotta love a story that includes the words lolling indolently. Just reading it made me imagine myself stretched out on the sand under a big umbrella with a cold beverage next to me. Wait, I think I smell sun tan lotion -- an aroma which always makes me think of summer no matter when or where I smell it.

I'd really enjoy being on a beach right now, but your words gave me a vision that was almost as good.
