Subject: Hooking an MP3 to older stereo

After being extremely frustrated with horrible sound quality out of an FM transmitter, I have hooked up a Rio Carbon MP3 player to a system in a different way and am curious if I'm going to harm anything. So far it works great, I'm just a little concerned because it's kind of a jerry-rig:

The system is an older (@1996) Panasonic deck hooked with pre-outs to a Rockford Fosgate amp (2 channel bridged to 4). I used 2 2-to-1 RCA connectors (2 female to 1 male)and hooked a simple stereo 1/8" to RCA cable out of the player into the adaptors for both channels, and ran the deck's pre-out into the other input of the adapters and plugged the single RCA into the amp. Basically it's just combining the two sources into the amp at once.

I thought I would originally be able to turn on just the Carbon and turn the volume up and have the amp run to the speakers. Didn't work. When I turned on the CD deck and turned the volume all the way down and THEN turned the volume on the Carbon up, it came through crystal clear. I haven't had the nerve to turn up the car radio, as I fear that might cause an overload.

The question is: is this safe? I believe line-level and headphone level are, other than line-level being fixed, virtually electrically identical, correct? Is there a risk to the amp? Is there a risk to the deck? Is there a risk to the Carbon? It's working, but I am just insecure about the rig.

Any help would be appreciated.
