- 20 Year Retiree Would Like To Join The 84th Engineers Association -- Tom Plumley, 15:52:33 03/02/19 Sat
I served in Vietnam from March 1970, until March 1971.
I was with D Company, 84th Engineers, at Ahn Kae. They had just moved from Tuy Hoa Airbase. I was in the earth moving platoon. SFC Gatty was our Platoon Sargent. SSG Jammer was our Squad Leader. Spent most of my time working on QL1, just below Pleiku, staying at LZ Action. Then, they turned us into C Company 589th and moved us to Buon Ma Thuot. I remember a guy named Niestrom (spelling?) because I served in Germany with him in the 80's. There was a guy on our guy truck named Baldwin. The gun truck's name was The Bounty Hunter when I was on it. After that, I think they named it, "Silent, But Deadly." I ran a 290 that had "West -By God- Virginia" painted on the blade. How do I join the 84th Engineers Association?

I served in Vietnam '70-'71. Looking for anyone that I may have served with. A few places we were at was Good View Pass and Whiskey Mountain.
I would also like to locate Charles Cox (Wally). I made contact with him a few years ago, but we never were able to connect. I lost contact with him after Katrina as he was from Biloxi MS.

- 444th Engineer Detachment? -- Bill Lang, 17:58:39 05/28/07 Mon
Welcome Home Vets.
I'm on mission seeking information of my dad's service in Vietnam. He served with the 444th from 66-68 at Pleiku and An Khe. Up til now, I've found no former soldiers of the 444th, so I've been checking with other units I know were in the same areas. These would include "B" co 84th, 511th eng co., 630th eng co., and the 937th eng group. Dad's name was SPC5 Jimmy Lang and he served as an asphalt equipment operator. He started at Ft Leonard Wood and rotated back through Ft Riley. He died in 1989 from Agent Orange related lymphoma. Anybody who remembers the 444th would be of interest to me as I seek to get a fuller picture of his tours in Vietnam. Thanks.

Can you verify if the Tiny Freeman in the Company B pictures is the same JJ Tiny Freeman that came back to Seattle around 1967, worked on tugs and taverns, ran for congress, and also worked in radio? Here's a link to story about him from 2007: http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/Maybe-big-living-Tiny-can-bring-character-back-1241413.php Unfortunately, he passed away last week, and we were wondering about his service history.

I know I've been slow getting on line, but since the 8 track tape technology folded, I didn't think computers stood a chance. Anyway, it's good to see that there are so many interested Viet Nam vet Engineers out there. I've been signing every guestbook & bullitin board I come across in hopes of finding others of the 557th (LE) Co. I was in the 2nd platoon during '69, '70 & '71. Most of the time we provided "equipment" support to the 31st Engineer Bn. To any of the other veterans, if any of this sounds familiar to the point that you may beable to provide a contact or other information, please send an e-mail. PAUL, thanks for the leads ! Hope the years have been good to you and yours. Take care, and have a great summer. Rusty

My name is Jim Churchwell, I was with the 444th Eng Det at An Khe from 12/66 to 12/67. I was part of the original group that moved the concrete batch plant from Qui Nhon to An Khe. We set up the batch plant and poured the original concrete runway so C130's could land at An Khe. I don't remember much else about that experience, in fact, the only name I can remember is Sgt O'Brian. I think the only reason I remember him is because I thought it odd, a Mexican with an Irish name.:) Anyway, I was thrilled to come across this website. I thought that when I left Vietnam, I didn't want to remember anything about it. Now that I am in my senior years, I'm wishing I had kept in touch. Maybe I can through this message board.

- Attempt to identify Army Unit near Qui Nhon -- Bruce H. Campbell, 18:55:16 02/11/17 Sat
I was in the Air Force stationed on an Army compound on a hill side south of Qui Nhon and over looking the city. I was part of a detachment operating the 439L Pacific cablehead. I believe the army troops on the compound were part of a combat engineer unit and am trying to recall who the unit was. I was there in 1969-70 with 12 plus or minus, depending on rotation, other Air Force personnel. The compound over looked a shanty village at the south end of the Qui Nhon beach and was on the ridge between a tank farm and the ocean. Access to the compound was off of the gravel road over the pass between Qui Nhon and the Quy Hoa leaper colony. I've tried to attach a couple of photos to help with I.D. but can't seem to do so. Anyone have an ideas who the army unit I was with was?

- 1971 Culvert mine ambush -- David Kennedy, 00:57:07 05/26/11 Thu
I was talking with another former 84th engr member about our tours back in 1971, and the subject of that day when 5 members of the 84th were killed by a hidden bomb or mine at a culvert site came up.
I think it was March or April of 1971. Does anyone have more info on the date and names of those killed?
