Hey Tom: the easiest way is to find some old homesteads and ask for permission. Beaches are pretty much a "free" zone but be careful in Charleston though. Some places are off limits. Check with the local law enforcement to make sure its legal. Schools are generally ok if you get the principals permission. I know a lot of people think of it as "public" land but the principal has the last say. I got permission of a school district to detect any school in the district. And still got the business when I detected one of the schools. So as a new detectorist make sure you have permission.

A few tips to help us all: Cover all of your holes. AND take off all of the trash you dig. If told to leave do so without argument. It's just to easy to find someplace else to go.

I go to Charleston about once a week. My daughter lives in Mt. Pleasant. My grandfather grew up on the Wando. In fact you can see the old homestead when you go over the bridge on hwy 41. Plus I lived in Charleston for 6 years so I do know a few spots. So if you want a partner on the weekend shoot me an email.

Cya...
Ron
