Santee Cooper cracks down on lake looters
MONCKS CORNER-Looters who steal artifacts, tamper with gravesites or otherwise destroy
South Carolina history as it is being exposed by receding waters on lakes Marion and Moultrie,
take note: Santee Cooper will prosecute you to the full extent of the law.
The problems of artifact looting and grave robbing along the drought-widened lake shores have
come to light in recent days. Santee Cooper, the owner of lakes Marion and Moultrie, has
responded by increasing its own patrols of the shoreline, working with state agencies such as the
Department of Natural Resources who also have a presence on the lakes, and using its own state
law enforcement officers to aggressively investigate reports of theft or vandalism. In addition,
Santee Cooper is involving state legislators, the state archaeologist’s office and other entities
with interests in the historical preservation issues to most effectively protect the history that is
being exposed by dropping water levels.
As part of the lake-building project in the late 1930s, Santee Cooper issued notices giving
survivors the opportunity to request that their loved ones’ graves be moved before the lakes were
filled in. Approximately 6,000 of the 7,000 known graves were relocated at that time, utility
records show.
“There are hundreds of graves that have been peacefully submerged since the lakes were created
seven decades ago. Apparently, there is a market for materials stolen from the graves, and we are
doing everything we can to protect these sites from pillagers,” said R.M. Singletary, Santee
Cooper’s senior vice president of corporate services. “We have an obligation and duty to protect
and preserve the lakes so that current and future generations may enjoy its natural beauty and
historical significance.”
Stealing artifacts and tampering with gravesites are violations of state law. Santee Cooper
prohibits digging for artifacts and any other activities that damage the terrain and its contents,
including riding motorized vehicles on the exposed lakebed. The utility will install additional
lakeshore signage promoting these rules in the coming days.
Lake visitors should report any suspicious digging or other activity to Santee Cooper’s state law
enforcement officers at 843-761-4020.

NEWS RELEASE
Santee Cooper does allow history buffs and others to walk its expanded shorelines to see for
themselves the history that is coming to light, which includes remains of the original colonial-era
Santee Canal, pottery dating back nearly a thousand years, and many gravesites, mostly
unmarked.
Santee Cooper maintains the lakes for the public to enjoy, and the utility is also extending boat
ramps and making other improvements to keep public boat landings open on both lakes. Visit
www.santeecooper.com for more information on the boat landing project.
“We’re proud to be custodians of the people’s history. When someone takes a piece of pottery or
a button, he is not only committing a crime, he’s also stealing history that belongs to all of us and
preventing those lessons being told to generations that follow,” Singletary said.
Santee Cooper is South Carolina's state-owned electric and water utility and serves more than
160,000 residential and commercial customers in Berkeley, Georgetown and Horry counties. The
utility also generates the power distributed by the state's 20 electric cooperatives to more than
685,000 customers in all 46 counties. Nearly 2 million South Carolinians receive their power
directly or indirectly from Santee Cooper. For more information, visit www.santeecooper.com.
