Dear Adam,

Yours is the first break I have had on Zebulon who was born about 1821. In 1850 he lists his place of birth as NY. However on the 1870 census he lists place of birth as VT. Zebulon from what I can tell had at least 11 children, many of whom operated canal boats. Zebulon's son Joseph b.1846 and his Grandson Joseph Gilbert b.1873(my direct ancestors)being only two who's occpation were on the water. Most of our family stories focus on them being canal boat captains. Could it be my Zebulon is the son of the owner of the Great Notherner.

I have found through a Beers directory that Zebulon lived on Pine Street in Rouses Point in the mid to late 1860's.

The only connection to Isle La Motte that I have heard of is, Joseph Gilbert Gilman's cousin Lillian was married to Ed Hill, the son of Wilbur F. Hill lighthouse keeper on Isle La Motte.

I have viewed an 1820 census record that shows a John Gilman living in Champlain. His household consisted of two males between the ages of 16 and under 26, 1 male 26 and under and under 45 most likely John, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 and under 26, 1 female 26 and under 45. Two are listed as engaed in agriculture. I have no idea if this John is related to Zebulon, just that he is the earliest Gilman I have found living in the Champlain area.

Will forward your message to a distant cousin for her to check with her Palmer and Trombley side of the family.

Thank you for the info and contacting me. I will keep my eyes open for anything about quarries.

Eileen
