Subject: Mary Lees - Manchester - 1803

My gggg grandmother Mary Lees 37 was arrested with Ann Hughes 27 for stealing four pieces of printed calico from the Linen Shop of Benton and Bennett on the corner of Exchange Street and St Ann's Square Manchester in 1803. Both where held at Lancaster Castle and tried before the Assizes. They were found guilty and sentenced to seven years in the Colony of New South Wales. They sailed on the William Pitt in August 1805 arriving in Port Jackson in April 1806. The voyage was a horrendous one, taking 222 with Small Pox raging on board.

On the Muster in 1806 it states, Mary Lees - married in England. Children: 3 boys and two girls. So Mary left a family behind. When she received her Ticket of Leave in 1811 she married John Pearce - they already had a son Robert. They had another son Richard in 1812. What happened to Mary's family that she left behind? What was her single name. Was Ann Hughes Mary's sister. Both Mary and Ann were indented to the same man William Richards. Can anyone give suggestions how to find out this information?

Alan
